EcoQuEST is a scientific research group focused on the ecosystem and environment of both the local area and the wider world. It is one of the newer STEM clubs for senior students, as it was only created in 2021. The primary EcoQuEST project currently is the restoration and monitoring of the school’s on-site stream, a few years ago this stream was full of waste. But, thanks to the work of local volunteers, it is now clear of rubbish and debris. It is then our role to ensure the upkeep of the stream, using water quality monitors to create a system of continuous data-logging, from which we can analyse its improvement. We aim to make the stream a healthy natural environment for local wildlife whilst it acts as a public space for the surrounding community. Our success in achieving this will also open up opportunities for future ecological projects and awards. Already, we have begun some initial water testing using a light microscope.
We have also been able to access equipment such as an electron scanning microscope that was utilised to great effect in multiple projects, allowing us to see microscopic imaging of algae and plant materials. A large amount this time was used studying diatoms, which are micro algae. We took some very detailed photographs using the electron microscope, and have worked with experts around the world for assistance and to help identify them.
Other projects would include carbon footprinting the school. We hope that this information will help us lessen the school's environmental footprint.
